Top quality trees planted by a licensed ISA Certified Arborist

Hiring a certified arborist to plant your tree can make a Huge difference in the length of its lifespan.
At Black Walnut Arborists, we are ISA Certified and have been happily planting trees to improve Denver neighborhoods since 2019.

Here’s a quick story that shows the value of hiring a qualified arborist:
Trees planted in the Central Park neighborhood of Denver when it was built are what arborists call “landscaper plants”.
Many of them were planted either too high, leaving young roots so close to the surface they were crushed,
or with girdling roots that are now choking the trees out after 30 years.
Hundreds of trees in Central Park are dying 50-75 years earlier than their life potential.

When you hire Black Walnut Arborists, you are planting a tree that will one day shade your great grandkids as they play …
or shade for your dog’s great-great-great-great-great grand dogs …
… we get it … kids aren’t for everyone.

Black Walnut Arborists is based in the East Colfax neighborhood of Denver
We service the Denver/Aurora metro area.

Our Tree Planting/Delivery Special Averages $200 less than our competitors!

What sets us apart from other tree companies is that at Black Walnut Arborists,

WE HAVE A LIFE LONG LOVE OF TREES.

Growing up we climbed the …
Ponderosa Pines in the Rocky Mountains,
Pecan trees in the Eastern Coastal Forest of North Carolina,
Mango trees in the jungles of Mexico and Central America.

As we grew, we watched the trees grow; they became a part of us & of our families,
a living monument of both our histories & our legacies.

At Black Walnut we believe that you don’t have to love trees to be an arborist,
trees just seem to come out a lot healthier when you do.

Corporate companies that are in tree work “for the money”
do not attend to the small details that an arborist who loves trees does.
We pride ourselves in giving every tree we plant and prune the same love and care we give our own trees at home.

Whether it’s planting a tree for generations of your family to enjoy,
or doing a structural trim to maintain the health of your tree,
Black Walnut Arborists provide top quality tree work for a reasonable price.

The Best Quality Trees on the Market

Our trees are sourced from a top-notch grower who uses aerated pots that maximize tree health. Companies that use ball and burlap and traditional pots regularly sell trees with roots that grow girdling (choking) the tree trunk which can eventually kill the tree.

Black Walnut Arborists specialize in native, cold-hardy, ornamental, shade and fruit trees. We offer a large variety of species that have been carefully selected for Denver’s climate.

When is the Best Time to Plant a Tree?

March to early June, September to early December are the perfect months for tree planting.  With the right watering plan, trees can be planted year-round.

Succession is King! Succession refers to planting the next tree, before the trees you currently have need to be removed. An old, slightly  annoying saying in the tree industry is: the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. By planting new trees before older trees fail, you are planting the new tree before it is needed (and thumbing your nose at “planting a tree 20 years ago”). The average house lot can accommodate 4-6 trees- both current trees and a couple young trees to replace those down the road.

How Many Trees Should We Plant?

What does the Planting & Delivery Special Include?

  • Tree selection and hand-planted trees by ISA trained arboristst: Trees planned and planted by certified arborists live longer and grow stronger. Our certified arborists will examine the soil conditions and sunlight to select a beautiful tree that is best suited to your planned tree site. The majority of young trees that fail are planted in the wrong site; hiring an arborist to pick the right tree for the your site saves you having to pay for a replacement tree. Planting trees by hand ensures that the planting hole walls do not become “glazed” by an augur. Glazed walls are hard-packed which forces the young roots to encircle the tree, eventually becoming girdled roots that can kill the tree.

  • Permits and utilities: Black Walnut Arborists will work with Colorado 811 to handle location of all utilities prior to breaking ground.

  • Cost of tree: Our residential tree prices are among the lowest on the market (individual prices on Tree Inventory List). We plant 15 gallon trees because they have the best recovery time from Transplant Shock. Other companies will recommend larger, more expensive trees to “jump trees ahead” in the growing process. A tree industry secret is that a size 15 (1-1.5 inch diameter tree) often outgrows a size 25 gallon tree (2-3 diameter inch tree) in the first 5 years because it recovers from transplant shock faster.

  • Free microbial injection, a $100 dollar value.
We inject Microbial inoculants in the sapling roots to establish mycorrhizae networks & maximize nutrition during transplant recovery. Trees that establish mycorrhizae when transplanted recover quicker and grow healthier throughout their lifetime.

  • Posts and tree hardware for stabilization while young roots are being established

  • Delivery within the Denver/Aurora Metro Area
